In 2012, during a tourist trip, I was struck by the beauty of the colors and the songs of the birds that can be seen in the Indonesian markets. I photographed some of these birds in their cages.

The discovery, at the end of 2020, of an article about the poaching of birds in the Indonesian forests for resale in these markets, caught my attention. Indonesia is a fertile ground for such trafficking. The archipelago's jungle is teeming with species of songbirds highly sought after. For centuries, Indonesians have kept birds in cages as pets. In this country with a growing population, the obsession with having birds at home and participating in chirping contests has fueled an unprecedented demand in recent years, partly fueled by trafficking.

Beyond trafficking, some of these birds are also threatened by the destruction of their natural habitat. While the Indonesian forest is the world's second-largest forest, on some of its islands, the planting of crops is gradually destroying the forest. Between 65 and 80% of Sumatra's forests have already been destroyed by agriculture, mainly due to palm plantation. While palm plantations are well known for their oil, they are also used in a more discreet but equally controversial manner for their wax.

In the series "The Bird Market," I rework these bird photographs taken eight years earlier. Through the act of scratching on the photograph, I shape the birds' plumage in an effort to bring them out of the page but also out of the cages in which they are imprisoned. However, I can only bring white into my images. The more I scratch the surface of the paper to bring out the different plumages, the more the birds lose their colors and fade away. They take on a ghostly appearance, symbolic of the dangers they face in captivity and a metaphor for their disappearance.

This series is the beginning of a body of work grouped under the title "Silva avium," which combines different mediums (ink drawings, scratching on photographs, and wax) to raise public awareness about this ecological issue threatening the Indonesian forests.
