Born in 1968 in Versailles, France. Lives and works in Marseille.

Armelle de Sainte Marie creates a color-filled universe made up of shifting and ambiguous geographies that hover between near-figuration and abstraction. Shapes and forms borrow from the animal, vegetable or mineral kingdoms and seem to generate their own dynamic and fantastic narratives.

Her painting, subject to discovery (serendipity), transformation, and motifs that spark their own inspiration, echos her interest in phenomena that transform and mutate.

“A kind of joy emerges from my painting. I am interested in vitality, entropy, transmutation. My work often involves layering, covering over, states of making where the various layers are visible. A rustling word... Sometimes I depart from these ‘states’ to focus on an object that seems to issue from it, and for which I am seeking a hybridity, and that provokes a disturbance for the gaze and our ability to understand its nature.”

"The Hybrids, for example, are in a way reinvented portraits of rocks, inspired by the observation of reality (rocks-worlds as the artist calls them), but which can also evoke the way some surrealist painters imagined a dreamed nature. As for the Odysseys, they are suggested landscapes, fluid and aquatic, whose chromatic richness goes hand in hand with the chaos of an original world."
